About this place
Open the drink list at Yashinbō, and Niigata sake immediately commands attention. Nagaoka’s Kubota line appears in depth, spanning everyday Senju up through Kohju, Hekiju, Manju, and even unpasteurized, undiluted namagenshu. Bottles from across the prefecture showcase regional nuances, including Shimeharitsuru’s Hana and Tsuki labels, Tsurunotomo, Kakurei, and Hakkaisan. From crisp, bone-dry pours like Sado no Onigoroshi and Koshinokagetora to the rounder, gentle profile of Jozen Mizunogotoshi, the cellar gives diners plenty of latitude to match their mood.
The food keeps pace with the drinks through honest, comforting izakaya standards. Niigata’s famed thick Tochio deep-fried tofu is an obvious choice, alongside small plates tailored for chilled sake such as tuna sashimi, shime saba (cured mackerel), and refreshing daikon shirishiri (shredded radish). Adding a plate of horse sashimi or starting with a cold draft or bottled beer before delving into sake allows for a leisurely, self-paced evening.
The interior combines counter seats with a raised tatami seating area, creating a close-knit, unpretentious environment where it is easy to settle in. Doors are open from Wednesday through Saturday between 17:00 and 23:00, with reservations accepted and Rakuten Pay supported. Complemented by the occasional appearance of a resident shop cat at the entrance, it makes a tranquil stop for anyone hoping to nurse a good cup of sake into the night.
